Assignment #3: I- Search Paper
Section One: Proposal
The reason why I chose my topic on air pollution is because it is a serious problem around the world and not just the United States. For many years now, some of our top government officials has been denying and not acknowledging that air pollution is in fact real and that is has been happening for a very long time. However due to more and more prominent research by scientist and college professors, majority of politicians are supporting that air pollution is in fact real and it is harmful to the environment and can cause great danger to our health. My methods that I use to gather information for my topic were meeting with a reference librarian to help me look up sources such as articles, encyclopedias and some scholarly journals from different colleges and universities. I also meat with my Professor to go over my topic and to condense my topic and focus on the things that correlates to what I want to write about on air pollution. Another reason why I chose to write about this topic.
Section 2: Process
Mainly the process I decided to do was to look at the online data bases for my topic here at the college. One of the databases I looked was the credo reference which is an online database for articles and encyclopedia. Before I was searching for what database to use for my topic. I sat down and brainstorm about what to write about in regards to air pollution since this topic is very broad. The problem was getting my ideas condense so I will a clear focus on what I wanted to do with my topic on air pollution. After meeting with my professor, I was able to have a clear cut idea of what to do for my topic. Then I reached out to a reference librarian to help me search for articles and other types of information that I can use for my topic. Using the ebsco academic search premier was helpful because it gave a lot of facts that I can use for my project. The only con that credo reference has in my opinion is that it does not have enough information. Most of the articles or encyclopedia are very abstract. Ebsco was much better for me because it provided me with more articles and journals for my topic.
Introduction: Air Pollution is when contaminants of the earth`s atmosphere by gases, liquid or solid substances that has hazardous to humans and other living things. It can produce harmful odors. Natural disasters also contributes to air pollution. For the past fifty years or more our government has been denying the scientific fact or evidence that global warming and air pollution is not happening. In the present time our government that supposed to protect the people are now acknowledging that it is real and try to make an effort to reduce air pollution. It is our civic duty to take care of the earth and have sustainability.
Air pollution can be a threat to in our society because of the rising ice caps on the earth and the constant increase in temperature from the ocean to increase greenhouse gases that is produce from a lot of manufacturing, oil refineries waste that goes in a landfill. Industry companies that makes or produce things are one of the largest contributors of air pollution. Those same companies produce billions of tons of pollutants in the air. For example oil refineries, manufacturing facilities, power plants and nuclear plants. Power plants that produce coal to powers a whole state burns coal that creates sulfur in the air which is very toxic. The ozone layer that protects the earth from the sun ultraviolet rays being depleted which is caused by rise of emissions and gases, burning of fossil fuels. The rapid growth of automobiles, airplanes have also made air pollution a serious problem. Air pollution can also harm plants, animals and some materials that made for buildings. Because of all the years that has passed and the damage our country and all the other parts of the world has let industries of all occupations were allowed for a very long time to pollute the air that people and animals and all living things without facing any consequences. Now in the present our governments and other countries around the world decided to do take more responsibility about the environment, the damage is already done and it is impossible to reverse all of its effects. Now the government decided to put in more regulations on a national and state level to help protect the earth.
My position on air pollution and the environment is that I agree that air pollution is becoming more of a threat and more laws and better regulation needs to be in place to protect the earth because if there is no change the damages will be more devastating then what it is going right now.
Due to heavy pollutants and toxins in the air and the quality of air being poor. People are at risk at developing upper repertory problems such as asthma, bronchitis, lung cancer. Under high concentration of air pollution it is more severe and more likely to cause serious illness and death. In the late 1940`s there were over three-thousand deaths related to respiratory deaths. The Environmental Protection later regulated the amount of pollutions and emissions under the National Ambient Air Quality standards especially for pollutants that is severe.
For an example Carbon Monoxide can become fatal if too much is inhaled or sulfur dioxide. Lead exposure is a major concern especially for infant babies and children because most of baby food and toys contains lead that can cause damage to organs including the brain, nervous system and osteoporosis. A lot of baby formula that consumers by have been recalled because there traces of lead found in them. A lot of manufacturing facilities that makes and produce products may contain some lead which opposes as a health hazard to humans and the environment.
I am against any type of manufacturing of all occupations that uses hazardous materials because it poses a threat to people`s health. Also I believe that people deserve to know what materials are used at manufacturing facilities and should be disclosed publicly so consumers would have some knowledge of what is being used at manufacturing facilities.
We the people need to act as one and preserve this earth. It is our civic duty and needs to be addressed on a larger scale so that everyone would know what is really going on in our country. We need to take action and fight against air pollution or else there will be no earth to fight for anymore. Here are some websites below that are helpful and can share some insight.
